Friendship and Spiritual Support for Families and Carers of People with Mental Illnesses

A tribute

to Sr Dymphna

In 1994, an Open Meeting for families and carers of people with mental illnesses was held in the parish hall of St Thomas More, Beechwood, Middlesbrough on 21st July followed by a Mass with anointing in the church on 25th September.

Pastoral support meetings have taken place monthly since that time. The meetings took place in the church hall at St Thomas More until essential repairs had to be carried out. At this point, Sr Dymphna kindly allowed the use of the Sisters' dining room for the meetings and this continued for a number of years. More recently the meeting place has changed to St Clare's parish community room, courtesy of Canon Eddie Gubbins and Fr John Paul Leonard.

Sr Dymphna has been with us at these meetings since 1994 until the recent move to St Clare's. She has given us her unceasing support by listening, and with prayer, and her pastoral care over the years has been profoundly comforting, sustaining and strengthening to all who have participated in these pastoral meetings. In gratitude, a number of carers took Sr Dymphna to lunch and presented her with flowers. Sr was also presented with an enrolment in the Franciscan Mass Association for a period of one year, during which her intentions will be remembered in their daily Mass and in the prayers of the Friars.

Pastoral meetings continue at St Clare's on the last Thursday of each month at 7.30pm. For further information telephone (01642) 818332.
